British Taekwondo has been going from strength to strength; following success at the European Taekwondo Championships in St Petersburg earlier this year, our athletes will be looking to add to their ever expanding pots of gold.
The competition in Russia saw GB walk away with two gold and two bronze, Sarah Stevenson bagging her third gold in this competition alone, to sit alongside her bronze from the Beijing Olympics. Aaron Cook also claimed the top spot and both are currently World No one in their respective weight categories.
This year also saw Jade Jones crowned golden girl at this years Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, Team GB’s first ever medallist in the games. Our athletes now look ahead to the British International Championships in Manchester which take place on the 25-26th September.
Top class players from all around the world are competing including South Korea (Korea) who excelled at the 2008 Olympics, winning four gold medals in the sport. Gary Hall, Performance Director of BTCB – Sport Taekwondo UK Ltd, believes this year sees the strongest British contingent to date and expects the atmosphere to be ‘electric’.

Nine top British athletes will be competing and with some of the world strongest Taewkwondo nations taking part, the fight for medals is sure to be fierce. Rebecca Edster, Events Consultant at UK Sport, believes the competition will provide ‘crucial home soil competition experience for our top athletes who have made great progress on the world stage this year’.
UK Sport is backing the event for the third year running via the World Class Event Programme, funded by the National Lottery. As London 2012 draws nearer, all eyes are on potential medal winners and these Championships will be a prime opportunity for our athletes to show the world what they are made of.
