Singapore 2010: Team GB Youth Olympic Games Round-up (Day 7)

There was further success for Team GB on day 7 of Singapore’s Youth Olympic Games.

Annie Tagoe finished just outside the medals in the women’s 100m, securing fourth in a time of 11.73s. Tagoe said, “I could’ve done better but I’m excited to make a final. I’ll take the positives out of it. I’ve loved it here.”

Katie Byers made up for her disappointment at narrowly missing out on the women’s pole vault A Final by winning the B Final with a clearance of 4.00m, whilst Victoria Ohuruogu finished third in the women’s 400m B Final in 55.99s.

Megan Sylvester finished 10th in the women’s 10m platform with a score of 351.60. Sylvester was a little disappointed after coming into the competition having won the bronze at the senior European Championships last week, saying “The qualifying this morning went really well and I was quite excited coming into the final but it didn’t really go the way I’d have liked. Overall though I can take a lot of experience from it into the World Junior Championships next month.”

In the table tennis competition, Alice Loveridge lost her opening match to the host nation’s Isabelle Siyun Li in a tough 3-0 defeat. However, she bounced back to beat New Zealand’s Julia Wu 3-0 and set up a decisive final group game against Japan’s Ayuka Tanioka, which she lost 3-1.

Loveridge therefore went onto compete in the second half of the competition, played to decide positions 17th to 32nd. She won her opening second round match 3-0 against Algeria’s Islem Laid, and continues play tomorrow.

Other events taking place tomorrow include medal opportunities for the Team GB girls in athletics and gymnastics on day 8.

Sophie McKinna competes in the women’s shot put final, and Freya Jones in the women’s javelin final; whilst gymnast Jessica Hogg takes the floor in the women’s floor exercise final.
