Singapore 2010: Team GB Youth Olympic Games Round-up (day 4)

Team GB swimmer Rachael Kelly (pictured) has reached the final of the women’s 100m butterfly after successfully negotiating today’s heat and semi-final.

She qualified seventh fastest for the final, which she will contest on Friday at the Singapore Sports School.

“I’m pleased to be in the final, but I would’ve liked to have secured a better lane,” the 16-year-old explained. “It’s always hard from the outside lanes, but hopefully they won’t see me coming.”

Ellie Faulkner managed 27th fastest in the heats of the same event.

In Badminton, player Sarah Milne missed out on a bronze medal after going down 21-15, 22-20 to Vietnam’s Thi Trang Vu.

The Leeds based player competed with great determination and skill to take the match right to the wire, but she was unable to convert a set point at 20-19 in the second set in front of a noisy and packed Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Milne, who outperformed her pre-tournament expectations and was the last remaining European in the competition, said: “Overall I’m pretty chuffed to have got this far but I would have liked to have beaten one of the top Asian players in the tournament. When I came here I wanted to beat one of those girls but unfortunately I haven’t been able to do that, which is a bit disappointing.”

Jessica Hogg, the youngest member of Team GB, recorded a score of 47.450 in the women’s all around final to finish in 18th place. She will now compete in the floor final on Sunday.

The 14-year-old said: “It went ok tonight but not as well as it did in qualifying. I am just looking forward to the floor final now and hopefully I can do well in that.”

At the Bishan Stadium, Georgia Peel in the 1,000m was the only Team GB athlete to reach the A final from this morning’s qualification. Andrew Elkins, Louisa James (both hammer) and Abi Fitzpatrick in the women’s 400m hurdles will all contest the B finals.

Peel, who came second in her heat said: “I was really pleased with that run but I know there is more to come from me. I didn’t have a very good start at all and that affected me later in the race. If I can have a good start I am sure I can be challenging in the final.

Tomorrow will see medal opportunities for Team GB in swimming, equestrian and tennis on day six of the competition.
