Triathlon: Helen Jenkins cements fourth in world rankings

GB athlete Helen Jenkins finished fourth at the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championships Series in Kitzbuhel on Sunday (15 August). Jenkins put in a strong performance in the swim and the cycle, starting the 10km run in a pack of five with a 1min 43second lead over the chasing pack. She fell off the pace as Hyde Park winner Paula Findlay pushed ahead with just under 5km to go, eventually taking the win.

Jenkins had a good start in the pack during the swim, following American swim specialist Sara McLarty. Jenkins went on to form part of a leading pack on the bike, further opening the gap over the chase pack.

Taking this 1min4 43second advantage over the chase pack into the run, Jenkins ran into a lead with lead pack Emma Moffatt (Aus), Andrea Hewitt (NZL), Paula Findlay (CAN) and Lisa Norden (SWE). Moffatt first dropped back, and later surges from Hewitt and then Findlay proved too much for Jenkins to pull back.

Both Jenkins and Head Coach Joel Filliol were pleased with another consistent performance from Jenkins, who is ranked fourth in the world within just eight points of third.

Filliol said: “It was another solid performance from Helen. It’s been a consistent season for her, having been close to, or on the podium in every event since Madrid. The focus for the whole squad now shifts to the Grand Final in Budapest in September.”

Jenkins now has just under a month to prepare for the biggest race of the season, the Series Grand Final in Budapest where extra points are on offer. The event takes place on Sunday 12 September.

In other results Vicky Holland produce a good performance to finish 13th after swimming and riding with the lead group. Jodie Stimpson also kept pace with the leaders to begin with, but was forced to retire on the run having had a mechanical problem on the bike. Other GB finishers were Vanessa Raw in 26th, Kerry Lang in 28th and Hollie Avil in 40th.
