Hockey: England 1-5 USA
England women’s hockey team lost their second and final test to the USA with a 5-1 thrashing at Bisham Abbey yesterday (August 5).
Looking lively in the opening stages, England were rewarded with an early lead. Crista Cullen opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a good effort from a penalty corner. The Leicester defender’s efforts were ruled out though two minutes later through Katie O’Donnell’s break through one-on-one with England’s goal keeper Beth Storry to bring the USA level.
O’Donnell was a pest for the English midfield and kept causing trouble for the defence aswell. Her persistence gave Jesse Gey her first goal in the 26th minute, a cross from the right unleashed Gey to hammer home. Keli Smith made it three only five minutes later, tapping home from close range. This left England 3-1 down going into the break and a mountain to climb.

The home side had a chance to grab a second from a rare mistake by the opposition, after the ball found an American foot, but Leicester’s Kerry Williams failed to capitalise from the resulting corner.
England struggled to gain any possession or momentum and were consequently punished. Gey bagged her second in the 51st minute and Katelyn Falgowski made it five after a mix up in the English goal mouth, gave her the chance to fire home and put the game out of England’s reach.
England’s coach Danny Kerry thought the American’s rightfully came out on top:
“The USA were better than us, more committed than us and fully deserved their victory.”
This was England’s final warm up game, which was to aid in the squad’s preparations for the World Cup in Argentina at the end of this month. The girls also went down 3-2 on Tuesday in the first test.
The squad that will travel to Rosario in Argentina for the BDO FIH World Cup be announced this Monday August 9th.
