Football: Glasgow City 8-0 Crusaders Newtonabbey Strikers

Glasgow City women’s football team put eight past Crusaders in their opening game of the UEFA Women’s Champion’s League. The tournament which is being hosted in Northern Ireland opens up exciting prospects for fans all over the UK to watch some top-flight women’s football.

Jane-RossThe Scottish champion’s ran riot against their Irish counter-parts in a game that boasted a flurry of goals. They started well and piled the pressure on the Irish hosts right from the kick-off.

City’s Clare Gemmell opened the scoring on the 12-minute mark, firing in her cut back from the edge of the box. Three minutes later the Scottish, kitted out in bright orange made it two with a fierce drive from striker Jane Ross (pictured) flew past the Irish goal keeper and found the back of the net.

Just prior to the half-hour mark, Leanne Ross made it three. A free- kick crossed in from team mate Emma Fernon found the midfielder who easily dinked the ball past the keeper.

Suzanne Lappin made it four just before the interval, her left-foot effort into the bottom corner created from good interplay between Kat Lindner and Gemmell.

Lindner herself got on the score sheet 15 minutes into the start of the second half, the German striker produced a lovely display, turning one player then rounding another to blast her shot past the Irish keeper. The 30-year old grabbed her second minutes later with a header following a city corner.

Rachel Corsie attempted to bag the seventh for the Scots, but when her backheel was looking to go off target, Falkirk-born midfielder Leanne Ross latched on and tapped it in.

The eighth and final goal came from defender Corsie, who was involved in the previous goal. Her solo effort from the back and one two with substitute Ruesha Littlejohn was a splendid last goal to end what was an easy contest for the Scottish Champions.

Manager Peter Caulfield couldn’t have been happier with his team’s performance:

“We started the game at a really high tempo and set the tone for the whole match. Ultimately the way we played allowed us to dominate possession and create a number of chances which we took. Overall I was delighted by an outstanding team performance by every player in the side.”

City’s next fixture in the Champion’s League is against SK Slovan Bratislava on Saturday August 7th at the Ballymena Show grounds in Northern Ireland with a 3pm kick off.
