Football: Glasgow City make their intentions clear in pre-season friendly

July 26, 2024

Glasgow City FC made a clear statement of intent with an 8-0 thrashing of English Premier side Blackburn Rovers on Sunday. Playing at Blackburn, City finished the first 90 minutes on a convincing 6-0, before adding a further two goals to their tally in the extra 30 minutes played to ensure every player had a full run-out.

Kat Lindner opened the scoring for City, swiftly followed by goals from Sue Lappin and Jane Ross to put Ciy 3-0 up. Lindner added to her tally with a fine chip over Blackburn’s keeper after receiving from Ross. Leanne Ross put one more in the net before half time, giving City a 5-0 advantage at the break.

The second half was less eventful, with Lindner putting City to 6-0 at full time to complete her hat-trick. Jane Ross made it 7-0 in extra time, getting her hat-trick soon after by striking into the back of an empty net, the City forwards having torn into the Blackburn defence.

City boss Peter Caulfield said “We have won comfortably against very good opposition and we are really pleased with the team’s performance. Six goals in normal time and a clean sheet against a very good side is excellent.”

He continued, “We now look forward to a week of preparation for a tough match against Spartans on Sunday.”

City’s first visit to England for a while was an excellent opportunity to see how they could compete, and in proving themselves against one of the top English sides they showed great potential for the coming season. Ahead of the first Scottish League match and the UEFA Women’s Champions League also fast approaching, City’s preparations look to be right on target.
