England internationals Katy McLean and Tamara Taylor are hoping to inspire girls in the region to get into rugby by supporting the inaugural Girls Tag Rugby ‘Wold Cup’ at Jarrovians RFC on July 20.
England vice-captain McLean and experienced forward Taylor, who are in England’s squad to compete in this summer’s Women’s Rugby World Cup (WRWC), are backing the event which is just one of several schemes aimed at leaving a lasting legacy for the women’s game in England.
Tag rugby is thriving in primary schools but South Tyneside School Sports Partnership (SSP) and the Rugby Football Union for Women (RFUW) want to attract more girls to the game and increase the profile of the WRWC.

Competition Manager Quenten Dodds said: “The idea is to promote girls sport by using female role models, and this area has two perfect role models in Katy and Tamara.
“We want to inspire the girls to continue participation in sport and show them that with dedication and belief they too can achieve honours and make a lifelong contribution in any sport or activity in any way they choose.”
The event aims to create different coaching sessions that the girls can take part in throughout the day, followed by an afternoon session where the girls will represent the 12 countries of the WRWC and play in leagues.
Each child will also receive a medal and certificate for the participation with the winning schools receiving a trophy.
The Women’s Rugby World Cup kicks off on August 20 with the pool games at Guildford’s Surrey Sports Park and the semi and finals staged at the Twickenham Stoop.
