Swimming: Golden Glory for Sophie Smith

Smith wins gold on the first day of the LEN European Swimming Championships in Helsinki. The British team had a great day and also took one silver and two bronze medals.

Sophie Smith win was the highlight of the day as she took Britain’s first gold of the Championships in the Girl’s individual 400m medley. Smith placed third after the first 100 meters but had pulled away and was leading by the second half of the race. She maintained her dominance and had paced her race perfectly touching the wall in a British Age Group Record of 4:44.46. After the race Smith commented

‘I felt confident going into the last 100 meters and knew I could pull out a sprint finish.’

Sara Lougher won a bronze medal in the Girl’s 50-meter Breaststroke race in a time of 32.48. Rachael Kelly and Rachael Williamson qualified through to today’s final (Thursday 15th July) of the Girl’s 200m Butterfly event. The girls go through in second and tenth position with times of 2:13.96 and 2:19.93. Other finalists include Emma Saunders in the Girl’s 100m Freestyle and Georgia Hohmann and Karley Mann in the Girl’s 200m Backstroke.
