Athletics: Injuries force Ohuruogu and Meadows out of Championships

Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu and Jenny Meadows have had to withdraw from competing at the European Team Championships because of injury.

Ohuruogu, who has struggled to produce her best this season, is suffering from from a tight quadricep muscle, while Meadows, dubbed the ‘Pocket Rocket’, has a sore Achilles.

With full focus on the Aviva European Trials & UK Championships, subsequent European Championships in Barcelona and their long term strategies for 2012, the two athletes will sit out the Championships in Bergen this weekend.

Meadows is to be replaced by Emma Jackson, whilst Nicola Sanders will now focus solely on the 4 x 400 relay. Kim Wall will take on the 400m individual race in Sanders’ place.

All three athletes are expected to be fit for the GB Trials on 25-27 June.
