Snowsports: Women’s ski jumping a step closer to inclusion in the Winter Games
Hopes for the inclusion of women’s ski jumping at the Sochi 2012 Winter Olympic Games have been boosted enormously following the International Ski Federation (FIS) announcing plans to create a new World Cup Series.
The new top-tier event is due to launch during the 2011-2012 season after the FIS ruling Council approved the proposal at the annual congress in Antalya, encouraged by the success of the Continental Cup circuit that has been running since 2005, won last season by Daniela Iraschko of Austria.
This will help to combat claims by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that women’s ski jumping lacked world-class competition and did therefore not deserve a place in the Winter Games. Legal action failed to force the IOC to change its mind, leading to the controversial exclusion at the Vancouver Games. The FIS is continuing to lobby the IOC to add the sport to the Winter Games programme.

The IOC’s criteria for inclusion require that a proposed sport must have contested at least two World Championships before it can become an Olympic event, which was not the case in time for the Vancouver Games. The inaugural women’s ski jumping World Championship was staged in 2009 and won by the USA’s Lindsey Van.
However, with the creation of the new World Cup Series and the IOC’s inclusion of women’s ski jumping at the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2012 in Innsbruck, they will now further consider adding the event to the programme at the Sochi Games two years later.
