Tennis: French Open preview
Summer is almost here. With long evenings, warm weather (hopefully), strawberries on tap and the scent of barbeques in the air, attention turns to tennis.
The 100th French Open at Roland Garros gets underway on 23rd May. The second grand slam of the year is one of the trickier events on the tennis circuit. The clay court is notoriously slow which is tough on players but entertaining for spectators.
This year, the Williams sisters continue to dominate the women’s game, and are top seeds for the tournament, with younger sibling Serena in first place ahead of Venus.
For the first time in 18 years, there are three British women in the main draw. British number one, Elena Baltacha hopes to be fit after retiring from the Strasbourg International earlier this week. She has a tough first round match against eighth seed Agnieszka Radwanska. Anne Keovathong (pictured right) also faces a seeded player, number 14 Flavia Pennetta. Meanwhile, Katie O’Brien meets veteran American Jill Craybas.

Unfortunately for the women’s draw, the tournament already boosts an impressive injury list: Belgium’s former world number one, Kim Clijsters is out with a foot injury and world number 3 Caroline Woznicki looks doubtful retiring from the Warsaw Open earlier this week.
In the men’s event, defending champion Roger Federer tops the ranking, just ahead of rival Rafael Nadal in second. British hopeful Andy Murray has a tough first round match against home favourite Richard Gasquet. The pair met two years ago at Wimbledon in an epic 5 set match which Murray won from 2 sets down.
