Sailing: Macgregor secures silver at European Championships despite setbacks

May 17, 2010

Britain clinched a spot in the finals of the Women’s European Match Racing Championships, which wrapped up this weekend in Hard, Austria. The Skandia Team GBR triple threat of Lucy Macgregor, Annie Lush and Ally Martin scored silver despite not being able to compete in the Olympic boat of choice, the Elliot 6.

The team handled the Scholtz 22s to push past Greece’s Sofia Bekatorou and Denmark’s Lotte Meldgaard. They went on to meet Russia’s Ekaterina Skudina, in the finals. Macgregor and her teammates lost 3-1, but stayed strong, missing victory in the final race by just a foot.

“I think it’s fair to say we never really made friends with these boats and we did not really sail to the best of our ability which is disappointing in the short term,” Macgregor admitted. “But finishing second at the European Championships when we are not on form is not too bad a result!”

At the Finn European Championship, Ed Wright, who won the Europeans in 2006, captured silver for Great Britain. Wright also had to overcome difficult conditions, with poor wind conditions challenging him in his race which took place on Sunday May 16 in Split, Croatia.
