Motor sport: Powell makes history at Silverstone

Alice Powell, Britain’s top female motor sport driver, won the 4th round of the Formula Renault BARC Championship at Silverstone, becoming the first female to win a Formula Renault race in the UK.

alice-powellPowell passed the checkered flag a mighty seven seconds ahead of the field for her second podium of the Championship, having finished second in the 3rd round of the season earlier in the day.

In 2009, 16-year-old Powell became the youngest ever female driver in Formula Renault after being introduced to the sport by her granddad when she was six. Of her recent success she said, “It has been a fantastic start to the season – the win is a credit for all the hard work put in by my team Hillspeed and engineer Sarah Shaw from Manor Competition. Qualifying was great with second on the grid for round 3 and pole position for round 4.”

Formula Renault is a 150 mph single-seater race series which provides a stepping stone to Formula 1, something the promising youngster has her sights on, “My aim this season is to win the Championship and realise my ambition to become the first successful female in Formula 1” She said.

Next up for Powell is Croft on the 3rd- 4th July.
