Badminton: 2011 BWF World Championships to be held in London
The World Badminton Federation (WBF) has announced that London will host the 2011 BWF World Championships, giving fans a sneak peek of world talent ahead of the Olympic Games in 2012.
The annual event will be played at Wembley Arena from 8 –14th August 2011 and is hosted by BADMINTON England.
China, who have a trophy cabinet stuffed with 49 titles since 1977, are the favourites but they face stiff competition from Denmark, Indonesia, Korea and Malaysia.
The Brits however, shouldn’t be underrated. They have faired well in the Championships, most notably in 2006 when Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms secured the gold medal in the mixed doubles.

British women continue to improve on the world stage with youngsters finding their feet amongst more recognised talent. At the Yonex European Badminton Championships earlier this year, Robertson and Jenny Wallwork defeated Danish world champions Thomas Laybourn and Kamilla Juhl and Glasgow’s Commonwealth bronze medalist Susan Egelstaff made it through to the main draw.
This week many British stars are in action at the Yonex European Badminton Championships including Robertson and Wallwork and Heather Olver and Clark in the mixed doubles.
