Netball: Dragons take the points against rivals

March 31, 2010

The Co-Operative Netball Superleague match between Glasgow Wildcats and Celtic Dragons was an eagerly anticipated affair. There was much at stake, particularly as both sides were looking to move away from the foot of the table.

The Wildcats were looking for revenge after losing against their rivals earlier in the season, but a tight first quarter saw the Celtic Dragons edge ahead.

There was just one goal between the sides as Celtic’s Becky Neate and Cara-lea Moseley formed a strong attacking partnership early on in the game. They continued to prosper throughout the match, and returned shooting success rates of 85% and 77% respectively.

The Wildcats were not having such a profitable time under the post, with the shooters having just scraps to work with thanks to the persistence of the Dragons defence. It was Glasgow’s third game in four days, and while they were refusing to use that as an excuse it appeared to be catching up with the players at the worst possible time.

Skipper Lesley McDonald has been nursing an ankle problem and again was brought back to the bench in the third quarter, as Wildcats then tried their luck with all four shooters, but to no avail.

Celtic Wildcats continued with a professional display and eventually earned a well deserved 48-30 victory over their rivals.

Denise Holland, the Glasgow Wildcats’s head coach said, “It’s a hard lesson learned.  We didn’t put in the performance expected. All credit to Celtic Dragons who kept composed under pressure.”

You can see a re-run of the match on Sky Sports 3 this Thursday 1st April, 2010 at 6pm.
