Football: Scottish Premier League results round-up

The latest round of fixtures in the women’s Scottish Premier League produced some action packed and extremely high scoring games. Top of the table Hibernian defeated Kilmarnock by 19 goals to 0, with Claire Emslie (4), Debbie McWhinnie (4), Ellen Pia (3), Kirsty McBride (3), Joelle Murray (2), Laura Kennedy, Lisa Robertson and Rhonda Jones all finding the back of the net.

Defending champions Glasgow City were one of only two teams to win away from home as they beat a resilient Hamilton side 3-0.

City made four changes to its previous line up, and at first struggled to find the spark to get past the Hamilton Accies defence.

Glasgow did manage to create chances in the opening few minutes however, and their dogged perseverance paid off on 20 minutes when Sue Lappin opened the scoring with a header. Moments later Lappin could have doubled her tally, but this time goalkeeper Lee Alexander made the save.

Jane Ross had no less than three chances to make it 2-0 before the break, but Alexander made some crucial stops to keep her team in the game at half time.

The second half began as the first had ended; with City on the attack. Emma Mitchell produced an excellent run and cross that had Alexander beaten – unfortunately for City the ball trickled just wide of the post.

It wasn’t until the 17th minute of the second half that Hamilton created their first shot at goal. Susan Fairlie made herself a shooting opportunity but from distance could only manage to fire over the crossbar.

With 15 minutes remaining on the clock, and the score still at 1-0, City made five changes with Donna James, Lisa Evans, Leanne Ross and Leeanne Campbell and Lauren McMurchie all being introduced. The substitutions had the desired effect when James netted with just her second touch of the game.

Lappin scored her second of the match shortly after when she volleyed home a Fernon corner, making the final score line 3-0.

Glasgow City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki was pleased with his team’s performance, saying, “We responded well from the disappointment midweek, kept a clean sheet and scored three goals against a stuffy Hamilton team.

“We took a while to get the second goal, but we always looked in command of the match and I am delighted to once again be able to fully utilise the squad and pick up an important three points.”

After two games Hibernian, Celtic, Spartans and Glasgow City are all unbeaten with six points at the top of the table.
