Athletics: Ennis storms to gold in Doha

March 13, 2010

Jessica Ennis, Britain’s world champion heptathlete, has been crowned the world indoor pentathlon champion in Doha.

jess-ennisHer final score of 4937 set a new championship record and beat Olympic champion Nataliya Dobrynska and Russian Tatyana Chernova into second and third place respectively.

“It feels great to beat the three medallists from Beijing,” Ennis, who has been struggling with a niggling foot injury since last year’s world championships, said afterwards.

“It is very special to win here and break the championship record. I had a great year in 2009 so everyone was expecting me to win. I know the world record is within reach.”

Ennis started the event well, clocking 8.04 seconds in the 60m. She then backed this up with a jump of 1.90m in the high jump, a height none of her competitors could match. In the shot put, one of Ennis’ weaker disciplines, she threw a season’s best in her final throw of 14.01m keeping her in the overall lead.

Following the break, it was the long jump event. This is a tricky one for Ennis, as following the ankle injury that kept her out of the Beijing Olympics the Sheffield based athlete had to change her jumping foot – a huge challenge for an athlete.

But she was calm under the pressure, and jumped a personal best of 6.44m. This just left the 800m and her second place finish behind Poland’s Karolina Tyminska in a time of 2:12.55s secured her gold medal.
