Winter Olympics: Zoe Gillings makes top eight
Britain’s Zoe Gillings finished in eighth place yesterday in the snowboard cross at Cypress Mountain. First place was taken by Canadian Maelle Ricker as she collected the host nations second gold of the 2010 campaign.
Second place was taken by French rider Deborah Anthonioz who capitalised on mistakes made by Swiss Olivia Nobs and Helene Olafsen, the Norwegian having to settle for fourth place.
After dashing through the qualification and quarter final stages, Gillings finished her semi final in a respectable third place, leaving her to challenge for positions fifth to eighth in the small final. But a knee injury sustained in the semi’s prevented Gillings from finishing the race leaving her to settle with eighth position.

She said, “The first heat was perfect and then the semi-final didn’t go so well. I had a clash of boards at the top and a pretty hard landing halfway down and hurt my knee and pure adrenaline kept me going.”
“I wasn’t sure whether to race the small final and even in the start gate I didn’t know how far I’d get down the course. As soon as we were about to race I felt my knee again so I decided to pop out of the start gate and then get off the course as soon as possible.”
Gillings is now setting her sights on Sochi 2014.
Despite Gillings injury disappointment, Britain still have cause for expectation as Chemmy Alcott takes to the slopes today, (Wednesday 17th) at 11am.
Whilst the female Round Robin team (Curling) face Sweden at 9am.
