Editor’s letter – March

February 3, 2025

Spring is in the air and we are looking forward to lighter nights and warmer days!

We loved the winter Olympics, it has been great to see all the women we have supported and written about in the run-up. Amy Williams of course was outstanding, but also Zoe Gillings finishing in the top eight was great and Chemmy Alcott deserves a cheer for the sheer bravery of completing the downhill. We also loved the curling and speed skating, surely speed skating has to be a sport that we can get even better at. It is the one sport that we have facilities and a good base of talented athletes - I just don’t know why we never hear about it. It is dynamic and exciting and an amazing spectator sport and we will be finding out how you can get started in it later on in the year.

But our post Olympics blues have quickly been swept away with the promise of spring, the sun is out here and although it is still cold, the spring flowers are coming out and the Easter eggs are in the shops. It’s a perfect time of year to think about entering an event and making the most of the lighter evenings. One great event that we will be doing ourselves is the Women’s Running Network, women’s half marathon. This is the first women-only half marathon series in the UK (three events, april, july, september) and although we are happy to run with men and women, we know that many women prefer the atmosphere of a women’s only event! Plus we love their attitude ‘ we’d love to to complete, rather than compete.’ The first event is the 18th April in Wiltshire and we will be running a competition to win a free entry soon. Don’t forget you can subscribe to Sportsister printed magazine and have each issue delivered to your door. This month we have a great offer that includes a years subscription (six issues) plus a free Ministry Of Sound Running Trax triple CD worth £12.99, perfect for those spring running sessions!
