For the last few weeks I have been trialing a new piece of home exercise equipment. It comes from German brand Kettler who is known for its high quality, state of the art technology.
The reason this bike attracted my attention is because of its green credentials. If being eco-friendly is high on the priority list for you then this bike from Kettler will put the pedal to the metal for eco-power.
It is cannily powered by energy created through the user’s own pedal power so only personal ‘fuel’ is used. This means you don’t have to have it positioned near to a plug socket and it is incredibly quiet to use making it perfect for at home, particularly if you are short on room and your bike has to share floor space with your sofa and TV as it did in my flat!
The 15 stages of resistance it means that even in cold and icy weather like we are having right now you can still be doing your hill training without having to step outdoors.

Since arriving in the office, the Sportsister team has been addicted to these new healthy snacks from BEAR. With upbeat and fresh packaging they are more inviting than a chocolate bar and far less damaging to your waistline. There’s no added sugar and no preservatives and they are also packed with fibre meaning you feel fuller for longer.
Choose from the Fruit Nibbles – 100% fruit, fat free, with less than 100 calories and one of your five a day; Granola Nibbles – made from crunchy whole grains and fruit, high in fibre and count as one of your three required whole grains a day and Yo Yos – 100% fruit rolls for kids (complete with cute nature fact card). The new Mountain Athletics range of trail running and multi-activity shoes from Timberland mark a commitment to producing genuine athletic equipment from a company that is often perceived to be more fashion orientated.
With both dedicated men’s and women’s versions available in two styles, in Gore-Tex and non Gore-Tex variants, it’s a small but very focused range, catering to the needs of those who like to get off-road. Timberland have endeavored to combine performance with more environmentally conscious materials, so the outsoles feature a blend of virgin rubber and Green Rubber compound, which uses recycled tyre rubber in its manufacture, helping to reduce the environmental hazard of waste tyres.
But these aren’t just an eco-gesture fashion shoe. The shoe’s main selling point is its Independent Suspension Networkä system, which consists of a multi-density mid-sole working in partnership with the unique lugs on the sole, to provide traction and stability on uneven ground without sacrificing power and propulsion. The OrthoLite insoles also contribute to the overall comfort of the shoe.
The Route Racer is a Gore-Tex shoe specifically designed for off-road and trail running, whatever the weather and conditions. It cradles the foot well, giving good wear comfort, especially to those with a medium to slightly broad forefoot. In use they offer good stability and a decent level of cushioning although they are definitely best kept to non-tarmac running. The Green Rubberâ outsole grips well and sheds mud effectively. The tough mesh and plastic uppers protect the foot admirably from rocks and undergrowth.
What’s more, they look great, with several attractive colourways including a not-too-girly grey and pink option.
