Lucy and Lottie get fit – Beautcamp Pilates

January 13, 2010

This week I am trying out the newest fitness craze in the world of Pilates.  Whilst my blog is aimed at classes for mother and baby to avoid childcare costs, I decided that as Pilates is so important as a post natal exercise that this would be my exception.

Beautcamp-pilates“Beautcamp Pilates is London’s answer to how to get that toned, taut Hurley-esque physique. This revolutionary technique in pilates & fitness has been imported straight from L.A. to London.” www.beautcamppilates.co.uk

Beautcamp is an exciting new concept sweeping across London from LA… immediately I am conjuring up images of glamorous celebs leaping on the latest fitness craze!  It certainly made me want to give it a go.

But I will be honest, it took an almighty effort to get to this class. I had to travel into London from Windsor with Lottie and I met my husband who invented a long lunch break and took Lottie Christmas shopping – three days before Christmas! I then jogged to the class and only just made it in time – not much LA glamour about that!

I was really looking forward to the class despite not having exercised for over a year except for some leisurely swimming.  A bubbly girl greeted me in reception and showed me where everything was.  The instructor introduced herself and showed me to my own workstation which looked rather like a complex rowing machine, she explained the basics and then told me to follow her instructions.

The classes hold around 10 people and individuals work on their own machine, whilst sweating it out through the reps.  Several fit looking women were limbering up whilst I waited nervously for the class to start.  It felt strange not having any idea on what to expect, I am used to being the one in the know and confident of my ability!

The class is well structured and the instructions are clear to follow.  The equipment is easy to use as long as you are not nervous about using gym equipment.  As a first timer to the class I would have liked to have been asked about my fitness levels and experience as the class was intense and hard work.

Beautcamp-pilates-2The machines ensured that you achieve an all over body workout through weight bearing exercises carried out on the reformer machine.

This class is tough!  My thighs were convulsing within minutes from squeezing the “magic circle”, a flexible hoop, between my legs and I found it hard to complete all of the reps for many of the exercises but this certainly did not put me off and I was determined not to feel intimidated!

It was odd actually being really quite wobbly, I had not realised just how much muscle tone and stamina I had lost.

The hour went quickly and I am sure further visits would find me less shell shocked!  I had a skip in my step as I left and it felt great to have had a really good workout and to have spent some time on me, away from Lottie.

I would definitely sign up for a course of 10 sessions if I could secure childcare as the exercises are specifically focused on the main problem areas affected after nine months of pregnancy and child birth and given the claims of gaining a ‘toned and chiselled’ look – a slice of life before babies!
