Sportsister’s new blog is written by Lucy, a first time mum battling to get back to her sporty and active lifestyle with 16 week old Lottie in tow. Lucy will be posting regular updates on Sportsister – just look out for them in our Features section or look for the special Lucy and Lottie Get Fit button.
I am very excited about documenting my experiences as a new mummy and my mission to get fit with my baby, Lottie. I am 36 yrs and I gave birth naturally to Lottie in September.
Before motherhood I allocated a good proportion of my personal time to fitness and the outdoors. I have enjoyed running for many years, cycling, swimming periodically and I was a big yoga fan whilst living in London.
When I fell pregnant it was a bit of a shock to suddenly have to cut back on my activities but what I didn’t expect was how hard it would be to find so few exercise options geared for the pregnant, ante natal market.
Surely not all pregnant women want to sit on the sofa for nine months?
Since having Lottie I am now keen to get out and about for my daily fix of fresh air. I don’t have a big bump to haul around anymore but I also don’t have any child care either except what I can beg from my husband, so I want to explore what exercise options there are specifically for mothers or the postnatal market that involve the baby, whilst helping me to repair my body from the trauma of childbirth and remain happy and balanced emotionally.
I am highly motivated when it comes to getting out of the house but this is not always easy no matter how active you are.
It is hard getting organised to leave the house, especially considering 3 hourly feeds, nappy changes, reflux, sick, blankets, hats, muslins etc.
I want to find what classes are available to cajole and convince the typically overtired and sometimes tense mother that it is worth the effort to get moving again. I live in Bray, near Windsor so I will be busy over the next few weeks checking out local classes as well as some London based activities.
Where possible I want to take Lottie with me as I don’t want to spend too long away from her and I don’t want to exhaust my finances on a personal trainer to come to my home. If you know of some great mummy/baby classes that you want me to check out, please let me know – firstname.lastname@example.org.
New Year, new start. After roughly one year of little exercise, I am ready to squeeze into my favourite dresses again!
