Netball: Storm complete the double to go top of the league

December 14, 2024

Surrey Storm made it two wins from two yesterday in Bury after defeating Northern Thunder 50-37 in their second match of the opening weekend of the Co-operative Netball Superleague.

Storm arrived ready to take on Thunder after an emphatic 70-16 victory over Team Northumbria on Saturday in the first of this season’s double headers.

Thunder started the match with far more direction and determination than the previous days opponents and Storm had to work hard in the opening minutes to form a lead, which they did to good effect. Some nice work between Gemma Wiseman and Tamsin Greenway to then feed the accurate Rachel Dunn opened up play despite the close attentions of Thunder’s defence and Storm built a 16-9 lead by the end of the quarter which gave them the cushion they needed.

Thunder swapped England players Sara Bayman and Jade Clarke around and Bayman instantly made an impact at centre taking plenty of ball. Despite another physical and much improved quarter by Thunder, Storm remained ahead by 26-18 at half time.

The 3rd quarter saw a much more controlled start from Storm and plenty of dominant play. Geva Mentor, Sonia Mkoloma and Becky Nash forced more errors and turnover ball and Storm once again showed flair in attack, Thunder, however did not give up without a fight.

The physical battle ensued in the fourth quarter with the attack having to work hard for every ball but it was Storm who made fewer errors and kept their heads under pressure. England Shooter Rachel Dunn slotted home some fantastic long-range efforts on goal and Surrey Storm powered on to win by 50-37.

The victory sealed a fantastic opening weekend for Surrey Storm who are now top of the Co-operative Netball Superleague with two wins from two.

Head Coach Mary Beardwood stated; “I am really pleased with opening weekend. We haven’t had much time together as a complete squad as the England players have only just returned to training so I am thrilled that the squad have gelled so quickly. It was a tough, physical game and once again the players kept their level of intensity up for the whole hour”.

Storm now have the Christmas break before taking on Hertfordshire Mavericks in the Sky Sports match of the week on Thursday 7th January.

Beardwood added; “We will be working hard in the coming weeks on different combinations so we are ready to return in January with all cylinders firing”.
