Deodorants: tried and tested

Staying fresh and sweet smelling even after the most rigorous work-out is important to many of us. With so many products on the market to combat body odour, and so much conflictling information we decided to try four completely natural and four traditional deodorants and see which ones worked.

Natural

The past few years have seen an abundance of organic and natural products hit the shelves. Natural deodorants will not stop perspiration instead they work by eliminating the bacteria which cause odour.

They do not contain aluminium chlorohydrate, parabens or triclosan and leave pores unblocked But do they work? Here at Sportsister we are split on this subject. The truth is some work better than others, but our favourite, Salt Of The Earth, works really well.

In fact it is so good that we would almost call it miraculous - it has no scent of its own and leaves an invisible layer, a perfect product - we are hooked!

1. Salt Of The Earth *Sportsister loves*

This is a totally natural, really effective crystal deodorant that works by leaving a thin layer of natural mineral salts on your skin. These mineral salts are a natural deodorant and inhibit body odour and as an added bonus leave no marks and dry quickly. Solid stick £5.49 (90gm) www.crystalspring.co.uk (Pictured above right)

2. Erbaviva Lemon and Sage organic deodorant

Organic extracts of sage, lemon, patchouli and teatree oils combine to create this bold smelling product that counteracts the growth of bacteria but doesn’t clog pores. It’s as pure as they come and if you like the aroma it’s a great product. Pump Spray £12.00 (100ml) www.erbaviva.co.uk (Pictured below left)

3. Green People Aloe Vera organic formula deodorant

A refreshing deodorant with a gentle scent that is also suitable for people who may be prone to eczema and psoriasis. Our tester was really happy with the results. Roll on £6.84 (75ml) www.greenpeople.co.uk (Pictured above centre)

4. Bionsen Japanese Spa Minerals pump spray deodorant

The Japanese Spa Minerals neutralise bacteria as well as help to nourish and protect skin. It also has a great fresh smell and does the job - we liked it! Pump spray £2.49 (100ml) www.bionsen.co.uk. (Pictured above right -Roll on also shown)

Traditional

Traditional deodorants and anti-perspirants work to prevent body odour and can help reduce perspiration all together through the addition of aluminium chlorohydrate. They are reliable enough for the most challenging day and are generally cheaper than the natural brands.

Aside from eliminating body odour many also offer additional features like skin calming or softening qualities. Our favourite is the new Sanex Naturprotect range. It has a great fresh and light smell, works really well and ticks all the boxes for a feel good factor.

1. Sanex Naturprotect with mineral alum *Sportsister loves*

Naturprotect combines traditional deodorant qualities with alum, a mineral used by many of the natural deodorants brands. It offers 24 hour protection, dermatologically tested and has had its research validated by the British Skin Foundation. Spray £2.29 (150ml), roll on £1.79 (50ml) www.sanex.net (Pictured above far left)

2. Dove Invisible Dry

This translucent formulation helps guard against white marks and as with all Dove deodorants contains 1/4 moisturising cream, a pleasant fragrant smell and 24 hour dryness protection. Reliable and straight forward, we liked this product. Roll on £1.88 (50ml) www.dove.co.uk (Pictured above left)

3. Sure Biorhythm Body Responsive

Sure Biorhythm has intelligent microcapsules that release extra fragrance when your body begins to perspire so it works in sync with you. Perfect for days when you don’t know what to expect and has a great fresh fragrance. Spray £1.75 (150ml) www.suredeodorant.co.uk (Pictured above right)

4. Sure Calming Deodorant with Calendula

This new formula from Sure provides the protection you’d expect but with the added benefit of soothing Calendula which is calming for the skin. It has quite a sweet, floral scent and is reliable enough to cope with the most rigorous workout. Roll on £1.88 (50ml) www.suredeodorant.co.uk (Pictured above far right)
