Cricket: England defeated West Indies by 6 wickets in final Twenty20 of series

November 13, 2024

England ended their tour of the West Indies on a positive note, comfortably defeating the home side by six wickets to win the final Twenty20 game of the series.

West Indies won their third successive toss and this time chose to bat. Having already won the series the West Indies rested Staphanie Taylor, who had impressed throughout both the ODI and Twenty20 games, Anisa Mohammed and Cordel Jack.

England’s Nicky Shaw had recovered from an injury and was back in the side with Danielle Hazell making her second appearance for England at the expense of Anya Shrubsole and Laura Marsh.

Pamela Lavine and Merissa Aguilleira opened the batting, when, for the first time in the series a clear blue sky meant play could start on time. Katherine Brunt opened the bowling and once again began superbly, taking a wicket with her third ball when Aguilleira was out lbw without scoring.

With Holly Colvin and Isa Guha also bowling well the West Indians were restricted to 40-3 from 10 overs. A partnership of 47 between King and Lavine helped the West Indies to 106-4 before Lavine was out for 61. With King (25) dismissed in the last over, England were left chasing 120 runs for their first win in the three match series.

England openers Charlotte Edwards and Ebony Rainford-Brent survived a testing first three overs and then started to display the type of batting that helped them lift the ICC World Twenty20 Cup earlier in the year. The pair reached 49 in the sixth over before Rainford-Brent was out for 19.

Another typically gutsy innings from captain Charlotte Edwards (29) helped England to 69-2 with 51 more needed for victory. Jenny Gunn raced to 35 from 26 balls to help England reach 100 runs before an athletic catch by Stacy Ann King brought Caroline Atkins to the crease. Atkins and Brunt guided England to victory by six wickets in the 19th over.

England captain Charlotte Edwards was pleased to see her side bounce back from their disappointing performances during the tour and end the trip on a positive note: “It’s been a tough two weeks of cricket but it will be incredibly valuable moving forward.

“We have been able to expose some of our younger players to a lot of international cricket in a short space of time and have learnt a lot, not just about the West Indies and how they play but about ourselves as a team.

“I would like to congratulate the West Indians, they outplayed us and deserved to win but we’ll be back in May determined to retain the World Twenty20 and this trip has been important part of our preparations.”
