Chrissie Wellington is crowned Sportswomen of the Year 2009

November 4, 2009

Triple Ironman world champion and world record holder Chrissie Wellington was crowned the Sunday Times 2009 Sportswoman of the Year at an awards ceremony held in London yesterday (Tuesday).

Held for the 22nd year, the Sunday Times 2009 Sportswoman of the Year awards celebrate the biggest achievements in women’s sport throughout the year covering the whole spectrum from elite sportswomen to grass roots achievements and PE teachers.

It has been a tremendous year for 32 year old Wellington who smashed the world record in July with a remarkable performance at the Quelle Challenge Roth in Germany. Combining a 2.4-mile swim, a 112 mile-bike ride and a marathon in a time of 8:31.59 she broke the mark of Yvonne Van Vlerken by 13 minutes and 49 seconds.

Last month she competed in the World Ironman Championships in Kona, Hawaii for the third year in a row, and made it three wins out of three.

Her victory at the glittering awards ceremony held at the David Beckham Football Academy in East London saw her beat off stiff competition from world champion heptathlete Jessica Ennis who came in second spot and Olympic and world champion sprint cyclist Victoria Pendleton who was third.
