Triathlon: Bella Bayliss dominates in Ironman Lanzarote 2009

October 21, 2009

Great Britian’s Bella Bayliss has again taken first place in the Ironman triathlon series in Lanzarote, on Wednesday.

The winner of last year’s Ironman Lanzarote, Bella completed this year’s epic triathlon, which consists of; 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and a 42.2km run in 9 hours 54 seconds, with the next competitor coming in over six seconds later.

The professional triathlete has seen much success in the multi-discipline sport of late – in 2008 she became five times Ironman Florida champion and recently achieved top spots in South Africa, Embrunman, UK Ironman and a sub-nine hour race, finishing second in Austria.

This year, Bella returned to compete in Lanzarote Ironman with the support of husband Stephen Bayliss, a fellow triathlete, enduring six weeks of local training at Club La Santa.

In an interview with a Lanzarote magazine prior to the Spanish event, the Scot admitted, “For Stephen and I to both win…it would be a perfect dream come true.  It would be very very very special!

“However, we try not to think about ‘just winning’, instead we’re concentrating on each step we do before and during the race to make it possible to put ourselves in a position of winning. This year is a competitive field in both the men’s and woman’s events, but we’re not scared!”

After her success earlier this week Bella has now qualified for further events as part of TeamTBB. Look out for her in her trademark pink suit!
