Netball: Disappointment for England in semi final

Hot off their first win over Australia in 26 years, England needed to beat Jamaica to engineer another meeting in the grand final of the Co-operative World Netball Series but it was the Sunshine Girls who cam out on top 22-33.

The damage was done for England in the second quarter where both teams opted for the Power Play and Jamaica stormed into their unassailable lead. It proved too much for England who were already trailing from the first six minute period where the players were bounced around the court in a bruising battle to the ball.

It was a 12 point lead by the end of the quarter, missed shots from England coupled with a highly accurate Simone Forbes and Romelda Aiken partnership swung the momentum firmly in Jamaica’s favour. The Sunshine Girls dominated physcially and muscled England off the court, literally at times.

The third quarter saw Jamaica hold firm under some more sustained England pressure but the final quarter made for a hair-raising finish and really showed how Fast Net’s rules can create a slap bang finish.

Jo Harten proved the safest pair of hands in the England circle and even just out of it. She tried to capitalise on the new rules of Fast Net which allow shots to b taken form outside the circle for double points. Despite netting some of her attempts, the Jamaicans continued to score too and the lead was just too great to chase down.

After such a successful first day for England, it was a great disappointment for them to not make the final after all. Australia will play New Zealand in the second semi and England will face the losers in the play off for third place.
