Hockey: England beaten by golden goal winner
England’s women will contest the bronze medal at the EuroHockey Championships after going out 2-1 to a late German golden goal in their semi-final at Amstelveen.
Germany’s Natascha Keller opened the scoring on 27 minutes but Jo Ellis equalised seven minutes later. The game went to extra time after a goalless second half.
England survived several scares in the opening golden goal period before Maike Stockel chipped the ball over Duggan to seal Germany’s place in the final.

England lost by the same scoreline last time these two met in the 2007 semi-final in Manchester.
“We’re obviously a bit down,” said England head coach Danny Kerry.
“I think we let ourselves down with poor basic skills, which can be worked on, and when we do we will be beating teams like Germany.
The Germans struck first when a mistake by Chloe Strong allowed Stockel to surge forward and shoot at Becky Duggan but her save went straight to Keller who fired it in.
However, the team responded well and piled the pressure on the Germans with three consecutive short corners. Ellis converted the third of these with three first-half minutes remaining to go in level at the break.
The second half was much tighter with both teams creating chances. England were lucky that the match even went into extra time as Stockel was inches away from sealing a German win in the dying seconds of normal time.
With 90 seconds of the first half of extra time remaining, Stockel was again the thorn in England’s side as she deflected the ball past the on-rushing Duggan.
Kerry said: “We were the second best team out there tonight and we’ve come out of a great game as losers.
“But we know what we need to do to improve and we will be doing that. The girls will pick themselves up for Saturday’s game against Spain though; after all, there’s a bronze medal at stake.”
The Germans will play the hosts Netherlands in Saturday’s final while England play Spain for third spot at 13:00 local time (12:00 BST).
