Take part in the world’s largest global race

August 24, 2009

Nike has announced the launch of the world’s largest global race encouraging runners all over the world to run 10km.Designed to attract more people into their online running community, Nike says; “The Nike+ Human Race 2009 celebrates the growing importance of the online running community,” encouraging the almost two million members plus others to run 10km at anytime and anywhere on Saturday 24 October 2009.

Like many other corporations, Nike has noticed the growing reliance of the world on the internet. They have over two million people in their running community and many others use their site for information for sport training.

They have created a new virtual community specifically for this event, knowing that many runners will appreciate the featured training programmes and tips as well as the music provided by iTunes for maintaining concentration.

Nike+ held a similar event in August 2008 where they promoted the race in 25 global cities, with many runners racing money for charities such as the UN Refugee Agency and WWF.

This year they are taking it a step further by adding the virtual element which allows anyone who owns the right technology to race without needing to be in a certain city.

Runners will need a Nike+ iPod Sport Kit, the wireless system that links your trainers to an iPod nano, or if competitors do not own an iPod they can use the Nike+ SportBand. Both allow you to track your runs, with timings, distances and calories burnt and upload them to the Nike+ website.

Although it is possible to run anywhere, Nike+ recommends to their competitors that they work out their route in advance in order to be ready. When you sign up each competitor receives training advice and a complementary race shirt.

It is possible to follow a runner’s progress online, using the global leader board.

To sign up, go to Nikeplus.com. Entry is free.
