Hockey: England fails to reach their goal
The U21 England hockey team suffered a heavy loss on Friday 14 August when they were defeated in the last minute of extra time against their semi-final rivals Argentina at the World Junior Championships.Going into the game confident and ready the girls believed that this year in Boston, USA they would be able to prevent the Las Leoncitas from winning the silver or gold medal. Unfortunately the timing of the golden goal meant that England had no time to reorganise and attack and they now face Korea for third place after the defeat with a score of 0 – 1 to Argentina.

The U21 Argentinian team is well known for its past successes, having won the bronze medal in 1993, the gold in 1997 and then the silver in 2001 World Championships. In their pool games they lost only once to Germany, whilst England won one, lost another and tied their third. Yet throughout the match, England played very well, with strong defensive plays for the duration.
Heavy pressure from Argentina failed to get to the England team and towards the end of extra time there was a point when it seemed an English breakaway may result in a goal. Unfortunately, just as England’s defence was strong, so was the Argentinians who managed to spoil the final British pass.
Carla Dupuy of Argentina was their saviour that night, managing to do what neither team could for so long. Her high flick hit the back of the net before goalkeeper Gemma Ible knew what happened and the England girls were forced to accept that there was no time for them to retaliate. They would now go on to play Korea for third place whilst Argentina geared up to play the Netherlands.
Assistant Coach Martin Rodgers was disappointed but proud. He said: “To take it to within a minute of a penalty stroke competition for a place in the final is still quite an achievement. Argentina has a good team. They’ve got good runners and although they created more chances I thought the girls stuck to the game plan well and kept their opportunities to a minimum.” With little time to rest before their final game, England will be going over their mistakes once more before they play for bronze.
