Cycling: Doctors force Romero to abondon her record attempt

August 5, 2024

Rebecca Romero, the first British woman to have won Olympic medals in two different sports, was forced to withdraw from the non-stop Mixed Tandem Record cycling from Lands end to John O’Groats. Romero teamed up with Former Olympic Gold medalist James Cracknell and set out to create a new record on Monday, August 3rd.

After nearly 30 hours of cycling, the organisers asked Romero to stop at Johnstonebridge in Scotland following medical advice.

It was reported that the doctors felt that if she had attemped to complete the 874-mile route, her knees may have suffered a career-threatening damage.

Doctor Bentley Waller said: “It was a difficult decision to make because of the commitment she’d put in, but in the long run it’s the right decision.” For Romero, who is looking forward to taking part in the forthcoming London 2012, it may have been a huge setback had she continued cycling yesterday.

Romero confessed that she was ‘gutted’ by the decision.

Romero, who is popularly considered one of the best all-rounders in sport of all times, said: “James and I were were nearly up to 30 hours and 500 miles.

I’d been doing some preventive physio work because of some tightness and discomfort in my knees, but it was decided the volume of work was too much, and there was no time to recover and my knees are part of my day job.

Before today I didn’t have any pain, and I really wanted to succeed.”

Cracknell, the former rowing champion, who takes much interest in marathons, triathlons and various other sports, was keen to create the nonstop mixed tandem record. He said: “She’s hugely devastated…It was frustrating. It wasn’t easy. Telling her [that the event was over] was a job no one wanted, but it had to be done.”
