European Youth Olympic Festival: Team GB continue medal streak
Team GB have extended their medal count even further on day two of the European Youth Olympic Festival, in Finland. They enjoyed a golden day with victories coming from the swimming pool and the athletics track, where they claimed four gold medals. With a silver medal in the cycling and another in the pool to add to the medal count, it turned out to be an outstanding day for the young Brits.
13 year-old star Amelia Maughan got the second gold of the day when she claimed the women’s 100m freestyle crown. On reflection she said, “My reaction time was pretty bad, but I tried to go out fast…At the turn I was behind and about ten metres away from the finish I thought ‘I can’t do this, I’m going to come second’, but I tried my hardest and managed to overtake her in the final metre at the end.”
Maughan, who was clearly delighted, had this to add, “It’s a mega-PB, almost a second faster than my previous personal best…Standing on the podium was breathtaking.”
The mixed 4x200m relay consisting of Myles Couch-Anderson, Rachel Martin, Matthew Parks and Kathryn Woolston-Thomas continued the growing medal tally when they added another silver to the pile.
All eyes then turned to the Tampere Ratina Stadium as Jenny Batten smashed her personal best for the second time in one week to claim an outstanding victory in the 100m sprint.
“I’m so excited. It was a massive personal best for me and I really wasn’t expecting that, it is amazing,” said a delighted Jenny Batten.
Team GB Opening Ceremony flag bearer Abbi Carter successfully qualified for the final, as well as Adelle Tracey in the women’s 800m, while Georgia Atkins progressed to the semi-finals of the 100m Hurdles.
