Modern Pentathlon: Fell’s double success

Olympic medallist Heather Fell added a European gold and silver to her collection after two stunning performances in Leipzig, Germany.

She surpassed her expectations to come second in the Women’s Individual event behind Frenchwoman Amelie Caze, and later went one better; standing at the top of the podium alongside Louise Helyer, Mhairi Spence and Katy Livingston in the team event.

The 26-year-old was especially happy with the outcome of her fencing, as she has struggled with the event over the year.

‘‘I had my best swim of the year, a good ride and the combined event was probably my best one,’’ Fell commented of her performances later. It is the first time that she has medalled since the combined running and shooting event was introduced at the beginning of 2009.

‘‘On the last run I thought I could get bronze, so I was really pleased to get silver. There’s still room for improvement though.’’

The next test for her and the rest of the GB team will be the World Championships, which will be held at Crystal Palace from the 13th August. No doubt the former World No. 1 will be looking for a second world title, to add to her first from Millfield in March 2008.
