Football: Kelly Smith reports from America on the progress of Women’s Professional Soccer

The chance to play the sport that you love professionally is an opportunity taken by only a select few: those with the necessary talent and those that play a sport that is commercially and economically successful enough to support player wages.

The creation of the Women’s Professional Soccer league (WPS) in America offered female players around the world the chance to turn their passion into their job and many of England’s finest players have made the trip across the Atlantic to pursue a full time sporting career.

One such player to make the trip is Kelly Smith, the England international, who recently made her debut playing for the Boston Breakers. With two goals in her first two games and an accompanying player of the week award, it would appear that the decision to leave Arsenal Ladies was a wise one.

To coincide with the start of the inaugural WPS, Kelly has undertaken the task of trying to communicate the League’s message to a British audience through a weekly column written for Sportsmail Online, at http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football
