Volleyball: British women set to compete in summer European League

April 21, 2009

With all sporting roads leading to the London Olympics in 2012, the Great Britain Women’s volleyball team have received a huge boost with the news that they will be one of the teams included in this summer’s first European League as established by the Confederation European de Volleyball (CEV).

Great Britain have been placed into the second of two separate pools, Pool B, with Turkey, Romania and France, while Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia and Spain will compete in Pool A.

The teams will play home and away games against each other with the nation that finishes top of their respective pools advancing to the league’s finals.

Kenny Barton, the performance programme manager for the British Volleyball Federation (BVF), has suggested that the league represents an “ideal opportunity to continue their [Team GB’s] development toward participation in the London 2012 Olympics.”

Great Britain’s women will play their opening fixture against Turkey at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, 30-31 May, going on to face Romania at Meadowbank in Edinburgh, 13-4 June, before concluding their pool play against France at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, June 27-28.

All home games begin at 3pm. Tickets go on sale on the 20th April.
