Modern pentathlon: All four Brits through to final of Cairo World Cup
All four British women in action at the second modern pentathlon World Cup of 2009 will compete in Saturday’s (18th April) final after qualifying from yesterday’s semis.
The top 18 from each of the two semis progressed to the final of the event in Cairo, Egypt.
Charlotte Grandfield and Lydia Rosling both went through from semi-final A. Grandfield was 10th with 4020 points while Rosling was 13th with 4004 points.
Louise Helyer and Heather Fell both went through from semi-final B. Helyer was eighth with 4196 points, with Fell 16th on 4076.
The quartet of British men in Cairo - Sam Weale, Nick Woodbridge, Russell North and Gareth Evans - compete in the men’s qualifiers today aiming to secure places in Sunday’s final.
Modern Pentathlon is one of Britain’s most successful Olympic sports. The sport for women was introduced to the Olympics at Sydney 2000 and since then Britain’s women have won four Olympic medals - or 66 per cent of the medals available to them. Steph Cook won gold and Kate Allenby bronze at Sydney 2000, with Georgina Harland winning bronze at Athens in 2004 and Heather Fell winning Olympic silver at the Beijing 2008 Games.
