Cycling: Copenhagen UCI Track World Cup, day 1
The GB women took two Golds and a Bronze medal on the first day of the UCI World Cup in Copenhagen, thanks to Lizzie Armitstead, Victoria Pendleton, and Joanna Rowsell.
Women’s Sprint
Victoria Pendleton started the day well for Britain as fastest qualifier in the Women’s Sprint. Anna Blyth also qualified but Helen Scott, making her Wold Cup debut, was unable to make it to the match
Victoria almost came unstuck in the semi-finals after crashing on the line in the first round, but she went on to win the next two rounds and a place in the final. The final was a much more straight forward affair and she went on to win the Gold in two straight rides
Women’s Scratch Race
Three British women made it to the final in this event – Lizzie Armitstead, Lucy Martin and Katie Colclough. Lizzie performed brilliantly, when Vera Koedooder (Ned) opened up a gap the pack were unable to respond except Lizzie, who chased, caught and went on to win Gold.
Women’s Individual Pursuit
World Team Pursuit Champion Joanna Rowsell, who had won the Melbourne round of the World Cup and was third in Manchester, qualified in 4th place to book a place in the final for bronze.
