Tennis: Robson loses in Australian Open girl’s final

Fifteen year old Laura Robson lost in the girl’s final of the Australian Open, going down in two sets to Ksenia Pervak of Russia.

The 17 year old, number three seed, looked in control for most of the match before her 6-3 6-1 victory.

Robson w as hopig to become the first British junior since Anabel Croft in 1984 to hold two junior Grand Slam titles at the same time. She is the current Wimbledon girl’s champion after beat Noppawan Lertcheewakarn of Thailand inn 2008.

“I felt she was generally more consistent than me and that was a key factor in why she won today, but it’s disappointing to lose,” Robson said.

Robson plans to play more senior events in 2009, having made her debut on the tour last year.

“I know I’m definitely going to keep playing the main junior events but involve more seniors into my schedule, but at the moment I’m not sure what my schedule is,” she said.

She has been offered a wild card entry into this year’s Wimbledon qualifying tournament and is hoping this may mean she gets to play in the main draw.

“That would definitely be nice but that’s up to the All England Club to see if they want to upgrade the qualies wildcard,” she said.
