Tennis: Robson and Watson into quarter finals

January 28, 2009

Laura Robson and Heather Watson have both made it through to the quarter finals of the junior event at the Australian Open in Melbourne today.

Fifteen year old Robson, the current junior Wimbledon champion, beat Croatian Silvia Njiric in two straight sets 6-4 6-2. The fifth seed will now face Romania’s Elena Bogdan.

Ninth seed Watson beat Japan’s Miyabi Inoue 7-6 (7-1) 4-6 6-4 despite the soaring temperatures.

She said, “I’ve never played in anything like that before. It was really tough and I was feeling dizzy and had black spots in front of my eyes during the second set.”

Watson will now face third seed Ksenia Pervak from Russia in her first Grand Slam quarter final. She commented, “There was no way I was going to lose the match so I just had to dig in and find a way to win. It feels amazing to be in the quarter finals and now I just need to concentrate on playing well and hopefully keep going in the tournament.”
