Jenny Wallwork and Gabby White scored one of their best wins together when the Leeds pair defeated Dutch No 1 pair Judith Meulendijks and Yao Jie 12-21 21-13 27-25 in a nailbiting women’s doubles first-round clash at the Hong Kong Open today (Wednesday).
The contest lasted 62 minutes and the England pair saved three match points before winning on their fourth match point.
This victory will give the England girls a psychological boost if England meet Holland in the knockout stages at the European Team Championship at Echo Arena Liverpool in February.
They will now face Malaysian women’s doubles pair Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty on Thursday, 6pm local time.
Imogen Bankier of Scotland and Sarah Bok of England have also progressed after beating Ka Lei MAK and Ion Weng LO of Macau, China. They will play Jung Eun HA and Min Jung KIM of South Korea tomorrow at 12pm local time.
