Club of the Month: Kings Cormorants Swimming Club

Kings Cormorants is Sportsister’s Club of the Month for November. This inspirational swimming club has been running for over ten years and has around 45 members. The emphasis is on Masters swimming and the members have achieved amazing international results.

International success

The clubs most famous member is 77 year old Jane Asher, who with over 120 records at World, European and National levels is Britain’s most successful Master Swimmer. She was also the first Masters swimmer to hold all the world freestyle records in her age group – short course and long course – simultaneously.

The club competed in the World Masters Swimming Championships, Perth Western Australia this year and achieved some notable successes. Eight of the group (Jane, Penny, Sue, Jim, Frances, Susan, Emma and Christine) won medals and Jane set a new world record of 2.56.57 in the 200m freestyle.

The Women’s 200 metres relay team (Christine, Susan, Emma and Frances) also performed extremely well, taking silver medals in both the 40×50 freestyle and individual medly events. (pictured above)

It’s not all pool based either, club member Jackie took part in a channel relay swim, completing the crossing in 18 hours. A major achievement for a swimmer who dislikes the cold.

Club heros

The club has many volunteers who contribute to its running, but especially worth a mention are Phil and Jane the coaches and Christine who runs the Sunday sessions and the website. Also a big thanks goes to Jackie who provides cake when there’s a birthday.
