Cycling: UCI Track Cycling World Cup Classics preview

This weekend Manchester velodrome will host some of the world’s top cyclists in the UCI Track Cycling World Cup Classics event.

Some of Team GB’s stars from Beijing will be competing in their first major event since the Olympics including Victoria Pendleton and Bradley Wiggins.

The now household names will be competing against international cycling stars as well as up and coming British riders.

The World Cup event, which is supported by UK Sport, Manchester City Council, the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and British Cycling, takes place over three days packed with 17 different race disciplines.

British Cycling chief executive Peter King said, “We are really looking forward to seeing some of the world’s top track cyclists in action at the Manchester Velodrome, which is the home of British Cycling.”

UK Sport’s acting senior events consultant, Simon Morton, said, “Following the sublime performances of the British cycling team at the Beijing Olympics, it is an honour to be hosting the first international track event since that memorable fortnight in August. The Manchester World Track Cup has become a regular fixture on the international calendar and we look forward to welcoming the British team, who are truly world leaders, back to their home track.”

The event follows a stellar performance Olympic Games in Beijing where British cyclists took eight gold, four silver and two bronze medals.

Tickets for the event have sold out, but you can still catch the action on BBC television. It will be broadcast live on BBC Interactive from 7pm until 10.40pm on Friday 31st October and from 7pm until 10.20pm on Saturday 1st November. Highlights from Friday and Saturday’s action with live coverage of Sunday’s races will feature in a show on BBC on Sunday 2nd November from 2pm until 5pm.

Plus Sportsister’s Kim Blythe will be at the event so look out for her reports and interviews with the leading British female cyclists coming soon.
