Badminton: Robertson and Wallwork off to winning start
Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork launched their new partnership in style with a first-round win at the Denmark Open Super Series event in Odense today.
The England pair defeated China’s Xu Chen and Pan Pan 21-18 21-14 and that earned them a second-round clash tomorrow (Thursday) with team-mate Robert Blair and Scotland’s Imogen Bankier.
Edinburgh-born Blair and Glasgow’s Bankier, the sixth seeds, defeated Germany’s Johannes Schoettler and Birgit Overzier 21-12 21-15.
Wallwork, 21, has the unenviable task of filling the shoes of Gail Emms, who won Commonwealth, European and World titles with Robertson as well as their silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games. Emms retired from international badminton after the Beijing Games in August.
New European champions and fourth seeds Anthony Clark and Donna Kellogg joined Robertson and Wallwork in the second round with a 21-11 21-15 win over Dutch pair Jorrit De Ruiter and Ilse Vaessen.
England‘s Elizabeth Cann was an early casualty in the women’s singles. The three-times English National champion from Jersey lost 21-19 21-16 to Larisa Griga of Ukraine.
Wallwork is in action again as she and her Leeds team-mate Gabby White launch their new women’s doubles partnership against experienced Dutch pair Yao Jie and Judith Meulendijks.
