Athletics: Aviva British Grand Prix

Despite pouring rain and terrible conditions, the Aviva British Grand Prix in Gateshead attracted over 7,000 spectators who turned up to cheer our Beijing stars.

Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu received a great reception, cheered on by the crowd as she did her lap of honour. Ohuruogu is now set to be one of the faces of the 2012 Games, due to her star status but also because she grew up in the east end of London.

Today following her 400m victory where she beat Mary Wineberg (USA) and Nicola Sanders, she said: “It means so much that so many people stayed behind in the rain to watch me today”

Other British winners included Marilyn Okoru in the 800m and Goldie Sayers in the Javelin. Tasha Danvers, finished in third place in the women’s 400m hurdles, as Jamaica’s Olympic champion Melaine Walker finished first again.
