Christine Ohuruogu has won Britains’ first athletics Gold medal of the Games in the 400m.
The 24 year old ran a time of 49.62 seconds to beat Jamaica’s Shericka Williams and American title favourite Sanya Richards.
Ohuruogu was clearly overawed by the win and was almost speechless in her post race interview. She is the first British Olympic 400m champion.
“I am just so proud of myself,” said Ohuruogu. “I know I can perform well when I need to. I may not have a good season but, like at the (2007) world championships, that’s what I train all year for. You always have all these dreams about winning, but you never think your dreams will be reality. I just ran across the line thinking ‘I won!’.”The 2007 World Champion has had a rollercoaster journey in the past few years after serving a one year ban for missing three drugs tests and then having her lifetime Olympic ban overturned due to mitigating circumstances.
