British number three Katie O’Brien has failed to make the quarter finals in the Slovenia Open after losing 6-3 6-2 to world number 65, Vera Dushevina.
The 22 year old, ranked 150th, had a fantastic start to the tournament with what was probably the best result of her career to date when she knocked out fifth seed Tsvetana Pironkova.
The Bulgarian, who is ranked 44 in the world, was beaten by Yorkshire born O’Brien 7-6 (8-6) 4-6 6-2.
But she had problems with her serve against 21 year old Dushevina, one of the many strong young Russians currently on the circuit. Dushevina broke O’Brien’s serve six times in the second round match.
Meanwhile in the in the first round of the East West Bank Classic in Los Angeles, Anne Keothavong lost 6-3 6-2 to American veteran Jill Craybas.
