British number one Anne Keothavong has progressed to round two in the Bank of West Classic in Stanford, California.
Keothavong, 24, beat last year’s runner up, India’s Sania Mirza, 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 in an impressive two set victory.
She will now face French sixth seed Marion Bartoli in the second round. Keothavong, who is ranked 82 in the world, didn’t get automatic entry in to the tournament and had to beat Julie Coin of France to qualify.
Keothavong will be hoping to continue her good form. This year saw her automatically qualifying for Wimbledon for the first time and progress to round two, where she was knocked out of the championships by the eventual champion Venus Williams.
Serena Williams is this tournaments top seed, playing for the first time since losing to sister Venus in the Wimbledon final.
