Weightlifting: Michaela Breeze gets Olympic call up

July 15, 2008

Welsh weightlifter Michaela Breeze has been selected as part of Team GB for this summer’s Olympic Games.

Breeze, a 29 year old PE teacher for Devon, has been handed a wildcard entry. It has come as a great relief to the 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medalist, who has been intensively training but feared the call up would never come.

“I am absolutely delighted to get a place, all the hard work has paid off and I’m really looking forward to getting out there,” she commented.

Simon Clegg, Team GB 2008 Chef de Mission, said, “In 2004 in Athens Michaela was the first woman to represent Team GB in Weightlifting at the Olympic Games. I am therefore delighted that she will be joining the Team again for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and also many of our athletes from other sports at our Preparation Camp in Macau.”

Fiona Lothian, World Class Weightlifting Performance Manager, said, “It’s absolutely great for British Weightlifting to have an Olympic place. She is an inspiration to the youngsters in the World Class Weightlifting squad whose sites are set on London 2012.”
